Mention Capcom to any kid, especially those who grew up in the 1980s-90s, and the immediate recognition that comes is that of an association with videogames. Capcom Co., Ltd., simply known as Capcom, is a Japan-based company that has gained worldwide recognition for its production of games, most famously the “Street Fighter” and “Resident Evil”. These multi-million franchises have even expanded in the entertainment arena to become blockbuster movies and have spawned countless other merchandise such as action figures and stationery products.
Capcom started in 1983 from parent companies IRM Corporation and Japan Capsule Computers. Both companies were developing and producing arcade games, from which Capcom came forth. The name of the company was taken from “Capsule Computers”, a term used to refer to electronic game machines. After establishing itself in this field, Capcom soon developed and released the popular Nintendo Entertainment System, a first in the niche of home console gaming. This soon became Capcom’s sole focus, and the company started rolling out the games that it is now known for. Its most popular series is “Resident Evil”.
The company’s research and development team is the backbone for the business. The early development studios were handled internally, with changes being made later on to accommodate the sudden boom in technological advances. Now, Capcom also utilizes external development studios to produce better games.
Capcom’s headquarters are currently located in Chuo-ku, Osaka, Japan. The company is headed by Kenzo Tsujimoto, Chairman and CEO, and Haruhiro Tsujimoto, President and COO. As of 2012, its total net income totaled 23.6 million US dollars, maintaining its status as a world leader in videogames. Capcom has international operations facilities in North America, Europe and East Asia, with Hiroshi Tobisawa as the Director in Charge of Overseas Business. The company still remains to be a favorite among videogame users worldwide, owing to the large variety of familiar game series it has released over the years.
